Press Release - May 2008
CIRCUM PACIFIC COUNCIL
GEORGE GRYC
1919-2008
The Circum Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources (CPC) lost one of its most productive, professional and distinguished members with the death of George Gryc this past month. George was an executive scientist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in charge of international mapping projects when Michel T. Halbouty in 1974 convinced him to join the Council as a Founding Member. He led the teams of earth scientists from the countries around the Pacific that produced the CPC’s series of maps on geology, energy and mineral resources and natural hazards of the Pacific Basin and he managed the cartography and publication of these maps in collaboration with the American Association of Petroleum Geologist. Gryc served as CPC’s science-statesman to solidify affiliations with numerous international organizations, including but not limited to IUGS, CCOP, AGI and GSA. Upon his retirement from the Survey he maintained his involvement with CPC as a Scientist Emeritus of the USGS and was elected Treasurer of the Council. He continued in this role until this past year. In his capacity as Treasurer he preserved the financial stability of the Council and ensured its non-profit status. For a more complete recounting of his professional activities please refer to the U. S. Geological Survey's news release. The Council is indebted to him for his many services and the Council is planning a scientific symposium in Hawaii for 2009 to honor George Gryc. We shall miss a good friend and are deeply saddened by his passing.
